I love writing about children falling in love. It happened to all of us, the pretending to stare out of a window. And even if the adults in our lives didn’t call it love, even if we grew up and dismissed it, it was love. We always dismiss past loves as something else: a crush, foolishness, infatuation, mere physical attraction. Everyone has this idea that kids don’t really experience love, that it’s a grown-up, settled, committed, mature thing. If youth is wasted on the young, love is wasted on the old.
